MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS

Scientists believe that MS could be triggered by a genetic and environmental factors.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a progressive auto-immune disorder that could be debilitating. It causes disruption of the myelin that insulates and protects nerve cells of the spinal cord and brain cells (ref Mayo Clinic). MS causes the immune system to mistakenly attack healthy tissues in ones’ central nervous system. This disrupts the flow of information within the brain as well as its ability to communicate with the rest of the body, therefore nerve signals are not transmitted through the body.

Risk factors are women between the ages of 15-60 years old. Some signs and symptoms of MS are:

  • Chronic pain and spasm in the back
  • Muscle weakness
  • Numbness & tingling
  • Difficulty walking
  • Blurred vision
  • Poor bowel and bladder control
  • Cognitive and emotional problems

MS is said to be a life long illness so  our clients are encouraged to communicate their concerns, problems and feelings  to our professionals on a regular basis so that our team can assess and customize treatment protocols that would work best for their conditions.

At HCS our nurses are trained to help you with coping strategies, a well-balanced diet filed with nutrients and fiber, regular exercises where possible, stress reduction activities such as meditation and acupuncture.

We also work in collaboration with our clients’ medical doctor or specialists to produce the best plan of integrated care and treatment options. Our Physiotherapists can work on your strength and balance and physical therapy to help alleviate pain and fatigue.
